Indonesia commemorates its 80th Independence Day as a symbolic reminder of the nation’s core values, emphasizing independence beyond freedom from external control but also from issues like hunger, lack of education, and underdevelopment. The Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program epitomizes this notion by providing nutritious meals as a tangible expression of independence in the realm of nutrition. More than just a food assistance initiative, MBG represents an investment in the nation’s future, particularly focusing on the well-being and potential of Indonesia’s children.

Deputy for Dissemination and Media Information, Noudhy Valdryno, highlighted the significance of MBG, stating that the program serves millions of schoolchildren, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers nationwide with nutritious meals daily. Aside from enhancing children’s concentration and academic performance, MBG supports their physical growth and brain development, envisioning a promising generation for Indonesia’s centennial vision of prosperity in 2045. Recognized by international organizations like the School Meals Coalition, MBG has already benefitted eight million recipients, spanning from early childhood education to high school students, pregnant women, and toddlers in the national health program.

Experts like Ikeu Tanziha from the National Nutrition Council have observed positive outcomes from MBG, such as improved Body Mass Index (BMI) among children and adolescents in various regions. Additionally, the program has shown to enhance classroom concentration and cognitive abilities, as evidenced by increased student attendance motivation and learning focus. Not only does MBG yield health and educational advantages, but it also stimulates economic activity through job creation in Nutritional Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) kitchens and support to small businesses and village enterprises supplying program ingredients.

A heartwarming example is Suratina, a 63-year-old grandmother working at the SPPG kitchen in Yogyakarta Special Region, who appreciates the job for not just the income but also the connections made in the kitchen. Her experience embodies the community-building aspect of MBG, reminiscent of preparing meals for her own grandchildren. This initiative signifies Indonesia’s commitment to fostering independence not only politically but also in essential aspects like nutrition.
