The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum. This proposal has been presented to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) with the aim of nurturing a healthy, intelligent, and globally competitive generation of Indonesians. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, incorporating structured and integrated nutrition education into the school environment is crucial for instilling a comprehensive understanding of nutrition from an early age.

Nutrition education goes beyond just food—it is about shaping the future. Ikeu emphasized that a child who is well-versed in nutrition will grow up to be healthy, critical thinker, and a valuable contributor to the nation. Schools serve as ideal platforms for systematically imparting nutritional knowledge to students. Early exposure to nutrition education helps students understand the links between diet, health, and overall well-being, while empowering them to make healthier lifestyle choices.

The proposed curriculum would cover vital topics such as fundamental nutritional concepts, food group classification and portioning, the significance of nutrients in bodily functions, and the detrimental effects of unhealthy eating habits. Additionally, nutrition education boosts students’ awareness of the importance of a balanced diet, enabling them to make informed dietary decisions and preventing diet-related illnesses like obesity and diabetes.

By integrating nutrition education into the school curriculum, a cohesive relationship can be forged between schools, families, and communities, reinforcing the message of balanced nutrition across all societal segments. Ikeu emphasized that such education equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lives, support disease prevention efforts, and enhance overall quality of life in the future.

As the driving force behind national nutrition programs, BGN has initiated various educational endeavors, including social media campaigns through YouTube podcasts and promotional videos showcasing activities related to the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program. BGN urges all stakeholders—government entities, schools, parents, media, and the general public—to rally behind the integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum as part of the national mission to achieve Indonesia’s Golden Generation 2045 vision.

Ikeu concluded that the Free Nutritious Meals Program can truly flourish when complemented with comprehensive nutrition education that resonates throughout all levels of society.
