However, that might change slightly. Because, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has just revealed the latest progress of the metaverse through his Instagram post. This could have significant implications for the long-term development of the metaverse.
The big news is: Meta will create an open-source mixed reality operating system developed for Quest 3 and previous Quest VR headsets. The goal is to expand the mixed reality OS ecosystem to various companies.
Meta will only build the foundation. That is, Horizon OS with the Android Open Source Project. The XR-optimal Meta version will be available for use by other manufacturers through their hardware.
This means that manufacturers like Asus or others that make VR can use Meta’s Horizon OS operating system. So people can get various types of VR devices at various prices.
Some details about the project have been shared. For example, Meta’s blog says that Asus ROG is working on a high-performance gaming headset.
Then, Lenovo will develop a productivity headset. Meta even partnered with Microsoft to create limited edition Quest “inspired by Xbox”.
Zuckerberg mentioned that other companies can create VR devices for various specific needs according to their target markets.
For example, productivity, fitness, watching videos, or playing 2D games on a large virtual screen.
Meta also updated the Quest App Store, which will be called the Horizon Store. Anyone running Meta Horizon OS will be able to see compatible applications in the Horizon Store, and the app store is being developed to have more downloadable content.
In addition to games, apps, and existing Meta Quest content, the Horizon Store will also list Xbox Cloud Gaming and Steam games.
